Monday Map -- Glacial Lake Ahtna

We live in the outwash of the post-glacial floods.

Glacial Lake Ahtna started us down our geology rabbit-hole last winter.  Because once we started looking for post glacial lakes (and their associated floods), we started finding them everywhere in the northland.

Names and shapes changed with time and in response to glacial advances and retreats.  Most of the freshest evidence is from the end of the last glacial period.

Winter Makes an Appearance

The back deck furniture, taken about ten minutes after 10:00 this morning.  I guess about nine inches had fallen...

The back deck, about 11:30 am...

and at 12:20 pm...

Looks like we may have to wade through waist-deep snow to go out to the sauna tonight.

At 12:20 pm-- 21 inches.

Monday Map - Doggerland

Doggerland was an area of land, now lying beneath the southern North Sea, that connected Great Britain to mainland Europe during and after the last Ice Age. It was then gradually flooded by rising sea levels around 6,500-6,200 BCE.--Wikipedia
