.When I read "Always Coming Home" by Ursula LeGuin, I came across the idea--put forward as a folk belief-- that bird feathers were words from the dead, beautiful and inexplicable. So when I wander out and about, I tend to pick up discarded feathers that catch my eye and wonder who is thinking about me on the other side.
