Heading Out

We're going to America for a couple of weeks, to drive with my parents from Washington to Arizona.

The journey begins with the first step--the 220-mile drive from Homer to Anchorage, where we will catch an early-morning flight to Seattle.

I took this picture as we were leaving Soldotna, eighty miles from home, and heading for the Kenai mountains.

I'm already home-sick.

Who took care of your cats when you went down to Arizona? I never go anywhere...Anna (http://catwhisperer.blogspot.ca/)

We were stuck at home until the cat population declined to a level that I could dare ask a friend to watch them for us. Until then, we made over-night trips or excursions where I could break off and come home every other day to care for the cats. I think 2012 was the first time I could leave home for more than a few days--we were probably at ten or eleven cats then--and I was blessed to have a good friend who was also the manager of the animal shelter and had a ton of pets herself. It's not just any one you can ask to scoop your cat boxes. She was wonderful about visiting the cats every day while we were away and we talked daily so it was very calming. I tried to rely on her as little as possible but she did give us the opportunity to leave home for more extended trips. Now, in Arizona, we are without a reliable cat-sitter, and we limit any trips to two-nights away at the most.

My friend retired from the animal shelter shortly after we left Alaska in 2016. Here are a couple of stories about her:

Sadly, she suffered a stroke late last year and is now recovering at her sister's home in Idaho. She had to leave her household of dogs and cats in Alaska, where her son and a coupple of good friends are taking care of them now. I wish I were close enough to help out--I know how heart-hurt leaving her companions must make her.
